This film tells of the story of 19 year old Miguel "Sugar" Santos who who inspires to be in the big leagues. This film also as a revolving theme around the American dream, different from Rocky but similar concept. Rocky was born and lived in America his whole life. Sugar had to make his way from the Dominican Republic to the states to start his "American Dream".

Sugar certainly has a hard life. He understands the importance of family and his sport that will keep him going. He is a great example and one of the many examples of Dominicans who came to America to play baseball. This was there life, they did nothing but play baseball. There absolute goal was to make it in the states. If they got kicked from the team, they would simultaneously get kicked out of the country back to Dominican Republic. After a while, sugar lost his edge in baseball and wasn't playing very well. It was driving him crazy. He was knocking stuff over and he didn't know what to do with himself. A better pitcher came along and dominated the game.

He was a very good carpenter. In one of the scenes, you can see him making a nice elegant table for his mother. Although a good baseball career didn't work out for him, he was able to play a fun recreation league and keep busy working as a carpenter. Sometimes when you think about winning too much, you lose sight of what's really important...having fun and enjoying yourself. That's what I take away from this movie. When all you do is work and you see no reward, that can drive a man or women crazy. Sometimes you have to chill and have fun once and while to keep yourself sane.
