Chicago, William Oliver

William Oliver
Chicago

Chicago is a musical directed by Rob Marshall, starring Renee Zellweger as Roxie Hart and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly.  Many musicals have great songs, great music, and all of the 'pizz-azz' that musicals typically have, but most have lackluster acting in between songs.  This is not the case with Chicago. While the acting isn't 'Oscar Quality', I would say the actors portrayed the characters very believably and it truly added a positive effect on the film.

Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart's murder trial, and her eventual acquittal.  This is told through numerous dance and song numbers, as Roxie wants to be a showgirl of sorts and have her name on the marquee.  The film transitions between the dialogue and songs, which at times can get confusing, but the story line isn't complex so you don't get lost.  The music is catchy, which is part of the goal of a musical, so Chicago passes that mark of a musical.  Overall, I believe that Chicago is a good film.  It isn't going to be eye opening or blow you away, but it is exactly as advertised. A good musical that glorifies crime through two appealing actresses.
