What would you say if someone you knew had their dream come true by making it big and then let it all go? That’s something that happened to Miguel “Sugar” Santos. This film sugar was released in April 3, 2009 and was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This movie portrayed the story of a 19-year-old Dominican young man named Miguel “Sugar” Santos and his journey to make it to the big leagues of baseball. Sugar was a very talented pitcher from the Dominican Republic that shined in his town. He was given the opportunity to go to the Iowa and play baseball for a single A team.
This was the beginning of a new journey for him; there were many obstacles that Sugar needed to face throughout his journey in his new life. He faced racism for being a Dominican in Iowa, and not to mention things were very different for “Sugar” coming to Iowa from his little hometown on the island of the Dominican Republic. Among other things that he hand to endure, there were a few positive things that awaited him in Iowa. A couple of these things were like being able to even play on a single A team in Iowa and just being one step closer to accomplishing his dream to be a pitcher in the big leagues.
Miguel “Sugar” Santos went into that diamond as a rookie on the team and showed the coaches that they did a good job by picking him to be apart of their team and then ultimately helping them strike batters out left and write with his signature pitching. “Sugar” was also welcomed to Iowa by an elderly couple that accepted him with open arms and understood what it was to have love for the game and what it was to have to wake up and train and work hard to be able to be the best at what you love.
Miguel went through many ups and downs and was thrown for a loop when things started to tumble down for him on the field. Miguel had someone else from Dominican Republic come in and basically take his spot as pitcher. While Miguel was welcoming in his new teammate, he became somewhat distracted from the game and began to back slide. This then lead to him messing up on the mound and he was immediately replaced by his new teammate and this lead to more frustration to the point where he became violent and very home sick and somewhat depressed. Miguel then let his pride get the best of him and instead of him working hard and snapping out of this phase, he took off and left the world of baseball behind him.
He then took off into the city and found a job making furniture and had to hustle at work to make a good amount of money to support himself and to help his family back down in Dominican Republic.
I think that this film shows us that ultimately, when there’s a downfall in life we have to chose to get back up and fight harder for what we want, or we can decide to leave it behind and try to live an entirely different life. In my opinion, I believe that “Sugar” should of gotten up and fought back 100 times harder to prove that he belongs up on that mound.
