Intro to Film/Film Studies

Chicago 1920s-1930s
Directed By: Rob Marshall
Featuring: Renee Zellweger (Roxie Hart)[Protagonist], John C. Reilly (Amos-her husband/cuckold), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma Kelly)[Antagonist], Queen Latifah ( Mama Morton/ Warden Captain of the Guard), Richard Gere (Billy Flynn). Best Picture 2003.

This Film was about Roxie Hart and how she killed her lover Fred Casely. It took place in Chicago circa (1920's -1930's) even though this movie was made in 2003.vShe was brought to jail where this movie mostly takes place. This is where she meets Velma Kelly and Mama Morton and many more inmates. Since this movie is a musical it does take place on stage as well. In this movie Roxie thinks that she shouldn't be in jail so she takes her time trying to persuade Billy Flynn to be her lawyer.  Billy Flynn who has never lost a case told her it was 5000 to take her case. Roxie didn't want to do what was told so when she saw her fellow inmate being hanged she wanted to make sure that, that wasn't her. Since Roxie is obsessed with fame she did anything that Billy told her and when his attention was on somebody else she would make up her own stories so that she can be on the news. During the trial she had to memorize the story that was told to her in order to persuade the audience. She made believe that she was pregnant so that her husband and others can believe her story. During trial Velma Kelly tried to bring down her case since she was jealous that Billy took Roxie's case first. After the court found her innocent somebody shot there lawyer outside. Roxie who was looking for fame ended up not getting her picture taken and not having the press swarm over her. This made her upset because they went to follow up with the other girl. After she tried to land her a spot in a singing career but got shot down. Then later reunited with Velma Kelly to make more money being a duet and becoming famous together.

I didn't get the plat at times but it was an enjoyable movie thus far and I would recommend for people to watch. Most people in my class did not enjoy it and I was surprised because I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it either but I did.

I thought I wasn't going to like this movie because it was a musical but it kept me entertained and I really enjoyed the song aspect of it. It was one of my favorite movie that we watched in this class thus far. I got the plot since the beginning and it was straight to the point. It also kept me engaged and I didn't dose off.

One of my favorite parts of the movie is when they kept singing like when a part came and it turned into the musical. The songs made much sense and it was talking about what was going on in the movie and the songs were pretty catchy. I don't like any musicals but this one so far has made me dive more into the genre.
