This movie perfectly showcases one going through hardships in order to achieve their dreams, or in this case the American Dream. Miguel Santos, aka Sugar, works hard playing professional baseball to get his family out of poverty in the Dominican Republic, he hopes to make it big, so his family could live a better life. While playing for an academy in the DR, he is recognized by an American minor league baseball team Kansas City. While the whole world (his community in the DR) celebrates him on his achievement, he just doesn't know what he is going to encounter in the long run. When he gets to the United States, he is housed by a family, who usually take care of foreign baseball players, and they try their best to welcome Miguel to their home and the US, but he finds it quite difficult living there, being which English is a burden everywhere he goes. Luckily when he gets to training, he meets up with a friend back from the Dominican Republic and meeting other Latino players he begins to feel like he's at home playing baseball. At first it seems like all is going well, he's happy in his new home, at his new team, and experiencing new things everywhere he goes... until he gets injured. As he recovers, he begins to see what the real world is going to be like, there's always going to be someone better to take his spot, as his old teammate makes the team and begins to play better than him, soon enough replacing him in the team. At this point, he realizes things will not go his way unless he does something, and that turned out to be leaving the team and starting a brand new life in New York. In the end, even if you already have your dreams and desires planned out, you really never find out how things will turn out, until well, things change, and it's up to you to see where life will take you, for the better or the worse. But you have a say in what you need to do to make your life better, so it's best you get it done as soon as possible.
