Sugar is the international film that defines the struggles of making it big in the American life, but shows how one can make it in the end. Miguel Santos (portrayed by Algenis Perez) represents the life of a young baseball player making his way through America as he misses home every second that passes by. His nickname "azucar" comes from the joke of him always eating a bunch of sweets, but also because of how sweet he is with the ladies. Miguel lived in San Pedro, Dominican Republic, participating in a baseball academy and earning some to little money. With that money he earned, he bought his family a bigger house and worked on the house whenever he could. After being sent to the United States to play for minor league, he put the house on pause, hoping to earn money that he received in Baseball would be enough for the house and his family.
During Miguel's time in the minor league, playing for Kansas City, he found himself useful, but unusual as he was somewhere he barely found recognizable. As time passed by, he was enjoying everything a little too much, resulting in an injury and having to stop playing for the season. The injury was terrible enough that he couldn't even recover during off season, eventually leading him to depression and homesick. He tries his best to still find a way of living, but in the end, he finds a way to live with himself. Joining a type of baseball that he is more known with in the community in New York City.
