Creed (2015) - Jack O'Brien

Creed is an American sport Drama directed by Ryan Coogler and Starring Michael B Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. For the film, Stallone was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role as Rocky Balboa.

Creed is a film that exists in the Rocky extended universe. In it, Adonis Creed (Michael B Jordan) rises to boxing fame with the help of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). Creed is the seventh movie featuring Stallone as Balboa, but exists separate from the Rocky franchise.

Creed is a breath of fresh air for fans of the Rocky franchise, with all new characters, and a new directing style brought in from Coogler that takes inspiration from its roots, while also bringing new light into a classic genre if film. Michael B Jordan is a wonderful actor who plays the part of Adonis Creed well, he keeps the same inspirational spirit of Stallone’s Balboa while also putting his own personal, sometimes, standoffish touch into the character.

The character of Adonis Creed is much like Rocky Balboa in the original films. Despite being in different positions and coming from different backgrounds, they both come to fight a championship in a similar way, Adonis being chosen for his name, and Balboa being chosen for his nickname. The characters both must improve themselves and push their games to new heights to have a chance at their respective fights, and both train in similar ways. This is made sure of as Balboa is Adonis’s personal trainer in Creed.

Both Balboa and Creed fight in matches that seem impossible to each fighter. The contrast between the fights come in the era they’re fought in. Balboa’s fight happens in the 70s, and is a dignified affair, despite the fanfare made by Apollo Creed. Adonis Creed’s fight however, is preceded by the verbal fights and trash talk that accompanies all modern fights.

During each fight, the theme is the same. Both are impossible uphill climbs for each respective protagonist, and both are fought in the same way: By Going the Distance. Rocky and Creed both, by seemingly impossible chances, take the fight to the final round, and each opponent is saved by the bell at the very last second, and win the fight. The same phrase “You would have won if the fight was a few seconds more” is heard by Rocky to Adonis in Creed and by Mickey to Rocky in Rocky.

Creed is by no means a remake of Rocky but is true to the film in many ways, especially in its theme of going the distance no matter what. In the Rocky franchise, Balboa becomes a household name with several heavyweight championships. In Creed, after the fight, Conlan tells Adonis that he is the future of his division, and we will find out if that is true in the coming sequel.
