Beast of The Southern Wild
This movie is another one with a strong female protagonist, and even African American actors and actresses. Our main character, Hushpuppy lived with her father, Wink, in "The Bathtub". The setting seemed post apocalyptic but also modern. Hushpuppy is a young girl that is left to survive on her own when a storm hits her town. In the beginning, Hushpuppy doesn't listen to her father and very rebellious. One time, she even burned down their house. Wink, her father, was a very rash and violent person, and he scolded Hushpuppy harshly multiple times. Also, he is diagnosed with a disease, and is dying every day. However, the reason is that the father wanted his daughter to grow up strong is because he wanted her to survive after he passes. Even when he treats her like that, they both cared for each other. The relationship between her father and her was shaky in the beginning, however it was truly touching to see them shared a moment in the end.
Hushpuppy is strong female protagonist because of her father's tough love and manly nature, that rubbed off on her. Hushpuppy's goal was to find her mother who was at Elysian Fields. She set off her journey and that was the transition of leaving her brat phase and into a mature little girl. In my opinion, the father stayed alive each day because he misses his wife. Anyways, throughout the movie, we catch quick scenes of the "beasts" and it could be symbolic or actual creatures that existed in the plot. She found her mother and headed back to her father with deep fried crocodile meat. Furthermore, she fed her father the croc meat and they shared a sad but touching moment as the father passes peacefully. I'm not sure what the beasts represented, however, those creatures later came face to face with Hushpuppy, and she doesn't flinch. That ending scene showed her mature nature and determined personality that she inherited from her mom and father. In addition, Hushpuppy stared into the face of the beast meant that she is stronger that the animals.
