Exit Ticket: X Day Two

Something I learned was that Malcolm X was in jail for ten years. I honestly had no clue that such  thing happened. I guess that's kind of bad, but now I know! He was in jail from 1946-56 . He thought his real reason for punishment was for messing with white women (good). He and Shorty were both punished severely. He got put in solitary for the first time because he forgot his number (did he forget his number or did he refuse to be reduced to a number?) then got stuck in solitary for another 10 days , until he stated his number A-228 (nice use of specific detail). It came as even more of a shock to me because that isn't even a real number! That was something that showed me how real everything was back then! Something I also learned this and last class is about who Malcolm was messing with that brought trouble and then there was a bit of foreshadowing . Malcolm all of a sudden was such a bad boy and got his first sniff, got his first gun, he was all set . I just didn't believe that the was going to get into AS MUCH trouble as he got into to. This movie is very informative and keeps your attention!

There will be blood-Robin

There will be blood... well the title alone made me belive it would be about a murder and horror film, with lots of blood and gore. However apon watching I found it had nothing to do with what I thought. It was about drilling oil and a man named Daniel adopted a boy HW whos father died, in order to use HW as a sale point in bussiness. Daniel is the protagonist of this epic award winning movie. while Eli pretty much takes up the job of the antiagonist.

It starts out with Daniel and HW advertising as a family drilling oil company to drill up bussiness. Everything  is looking great for these two, money, oil and power. But when they get a tip on big oil by one of the Sunday boys, HW and Daniel travel to the Sunday Ranch. At first they lie about why they are there, but once they stumbble onto oil... Daniel convinces most of the town to sell out to him so that he may drill for the oil and make everyone rich.

Through out this movie Daniel and Eli consantly are bumping heads, disagreeing, barginging and more. Eli says he is a prophate of god and pretty much rules the towns people and their beliefs. Daniel is now making more money than ever but then HW suffers an acciedent. The oil drill explodes and HW being too close loses his hearing. At the same time a man shows up claiming to be Daniels brother and HW gets shifted to the side and sent away to school. Daniel ends up killing the man who claims to be his brother cause he finds out his real brother died.

Daniel later on brings back HW and gets him a deaf teacher. They contuine on making money and drilling oil till HW gets married to Eli's little sister. HW then wants to go out and start a drilling company but Daniel gets angry and then reveals the truth to HW about his past and they argue through a deaf interupter HW has. At the very end Eli vists Daniel trying to get him to help the church but Eli ends up dying at Daniels hand.

No matter how you look at it this movie I would reccomend to anyone. It is worth watching and would grab any viewers attention. Every miniute will keep you guessing/woundering. Great overall movie that deffinatly desered the 2007 Oscar.

exit ticket Malcolm X

something I learned today was that Malcolm x 's mother was raped by a white man. When I first saw her I asked a classmate if she was white and then the movie explained it all. Its sad that many black females were raped and taken advantage of just for that. I learned the word conk and assume that it was basically the same thing as a perm because its a chemical straightening process they just probably didn't understand all the perks or whatever about a perm or even know what chemicals to mix to make it perfect. I also learned what a motif was before todays class i had no clue that such a word existed. Now I know that a reoccurring idea, image or other that has a particular emotional impact is called a motif and I think I have already found one in the movie , the part when his father was killed keeps popping up and throughout the whole thing so far there has been plenty of flashbacks. I also learned so much background about Malcolm X that I never knew. Social services played a huge part in his life and changed him as a person , took him away from his family and really tore them apart. I couldn't help but to feel bad for his mother so far this movie has been truly touching . Malcolm wanted to be a lawyer and the teacher immediately crushed his dreams, i couldn't live in a time like that . he was told he was a "nigger" so he couldn't be what he wanted to even though his grades were the best he was the best student and voted president.. he still wasn't enough . I can't imagine how that would've felt.

Bandlands Blog Midterm

Badlands 1973 dir. Terrence Malick
Starring Martin Sheen as Kit
sissy Spacek as holly Warren
In my opinion these were the perfect actors for these roles because they made it clear that this movie was meant to be a continuation of our theme celebrity and criminality. That made it clear that this movie was like a Knockoff bonnie and Clyde so to speak . Holly was nothing like Bonnie really but both Kit and Clyde persuaded a woman to join them for the criminality causing them to become celebrities. They were star crossed lovers
The story line was very clear and in the end I guess the difference between fantasy and reality was really shown. Holly knew that wasn't the life for her to begin with.
psychological health and maturity were problems .(psyc. health was more like kit .. played a role in his actions and holly was very young that is where the maturity played part and that's exactly why her father tried to keep her locked up)
this was inspired by the real life story of starkweather and fugate ... I remember that !

Holly was easily influenced, more passive, more of a bystander , follower.
KIt did do all of the work they avoided civilization and were staying in woods and fields
Holly didn't even respond truly to her father getting killed , all she did was slap kit
music did play a good part in this movie because when they set the house on fire there was like dramatic opera and then later on then comes Nat King Coles lyrics that shows they are assumed to love each other
but as I said before reality kicks in in the end and kit gets solitary and holly gets probation and messes with the son of the lawyer who defended her
